Statement.

The pieces I have chosen to submit shows the broad range of subjects I have studied during my foundation course and how much I have started to develop as an artist. The Hollyhock Sketchbook pages show evidence of sequential observation of the structural properties of a seedpod, focusing on smaller details and using the fineliner medium to its full advantage. The Architecture Sketchbook pages show how I adapted the skills gained from observing smaller subjects and applied them to a grander scale. I focused on looking at how buildings interact with decorative characteristics such as pillars, statues and arches.
The drawings and paintings of sculptures were part of a project that followed on from the Architecture Sketchbook, taking the strengths of our sketchbooks and making contextual links. I found that my decorative aspects of buildings showed muscular features; so I chose to apply my skills to sculptures, in particular looking at the faces of sculptures. I also began experimenting with mixed media to create new effects. From the sculpture faces I began developing my understanding of portraiture; retaining the style I had developed but drawing real people.
This inspired my latest project, in which I have been visiting a museum and drawing figures. Instead of looking at people’s faces I have been observing posture and the way people stand to appreciate the artefacts in the museum. I began this sketchbook by drawing pencil studies and once I had enough knowledge of the figures I began using ink.
I believe that since starting my foundation course, my technical skills have developed considerably. I am interested in the course because I believe that it will help my understanding of fine art as a practise, improve my skills further, challenge my perspective and realise my full potential.
